Week 11

This week I found lots of different assets online I could use for my map itself,

These included a dead tree which will be used for the Ruins area when i get onto that map, this will be used as cover and annoyance for the map.

I also found 3 different types of ruin, one of which was a old rock which looks kind of cool, it is too tall for a character to jump on but I think I will make ways for the characters to get on top of these.

Another type was a broken down old wall, characters can use this for cover and to climb up the sides to give them an advantage in whatever way they want to use this.

And finally I got a broken corner from a house with a window ledge, again this can be used as cover and there the window you can use to look out through.

The other things I downloaded was a wooden cabin, this will be used around the map as a structure people can hide in and use for cover and able to peek through the different windows in there.

Below you can see all these different types of assets in the game in which next week I will be making the ruins area with the blocks I have gotten and the broken down tree to help make it look even more baron.

Week 10

This week I decided to add in foliage all over the world.

I did this with the foliage tool in the engine that is available, The textures I decided to add in as the foliage was the Buttercup flowers, Ferns and Grass, this is to help add texture around the world so it looks a little natural.

As you can see in the screenshot above this is the tool I used to do it, and you can see how many of each type has been placed.

You may remember from earlier in the blog I added a "house". I have no given it a wooden texture and have decided to make this my "spawn" as I have realised it is going to be hard for me to make an aeroplane fly across the screen and jump out of it to land, well.

Here is the house now and you can also see the foliage in use there.

Week 9

This week I took a break from doing anything on the project itself, I had hit a mind block on what to do as I am not the most creative person in the world.

Week 8

This week I did nothing with regards to the creating the game, instead I decided to look further into the games design how it works and play some of the game I am basing it around to get more ideas towards the game itself.

With YouTube videos I watched a few different videos on how to create things in Unreal Engine and how the programme works, I am struggling to work my way around the programme and get things to look how i want, partly because I am not very creative its hard for me to put my ideas into action on the actual engine itself and also to benefit myself in working out how i want and what i want.

When it came to playing the game, I looked at how the trees come out of the ground and look at certain collisions within the game to give me some ideas how to work around it on my map itself, I looked at building lay outs and props inside the building to give me some sort of idea how I want mine to look in my game.

Next week I am aiming to work on props around the map and work on some sort of trees to add more obstacles to fight around on the map/

Week 7

This week in terms of the games design itself there wasn't anything further progressed.

The reason for this is because the week as a group we presented our presentation that we made in the first couple of weeks to the group. In the presentation we covered lots of different thing from our initial sketches to our final idea. Why we chose our idea and how far we are up to.

I started my presentation by introducing myself and the project name, I then moved onto talking about my initial ideas, why I chose them and how they would benefit me and then spoke about why I decided against the idea in the end.

When I got onto my final project I explained why I chose this idea and whom the target audience was, I went with people of my age and myself, I play the game all the time and lots of people my age do as well meaning it was the perfect choice.

When It came to the Q and A I got asked a few questions on how it would relate to the real game itself, I explained that I am remaking the map but putting my own spin on it, so it will still have the same sort of fields like the big mountain, a lake, marshlands, ruins etc but I will make them myself and put them in different places, I also got asked about how people well spawn into the game and if it will be PvP like the real game.
My answers to this question was pretty simple, I said I plan on venturing into a multi spawn start so there is a chance of spawning in 5 or 6 different areas, With regards to the PvP It is something I am going to research into, if it's something that is possible with my resources I will do it, if not I will make it into a survival game where it is the same aspect of loot up and survive but you will have to kill the "zombies" before they kill you.

Here is my presentation for you to view.

And here is the powerpoint

That is all for this week, Next week I am getting back onto the games design.

Week 6

This week I came into the lesson with lots of ideas i wanted to do which follows:

Ruins in the map.
Volcano in the map.
Houses.
Trees.

When I got back into my world I started by making the area of my ruins, i lowered the ground to make it all hilly for the ruins to engulf themselves into.
When it came to making the ruins themselves, i really didn't know where to start. I hit a brick wall when it came to fathering out how to make the ruins so I moved onto the volcano.

The volcano looks pretty good for my standards, the top of the mountain now goes inwards how  a volcano would, and it has fire and smoke coming out of it.

I then tried to make it so the volcano was all textured like a rock colour but as it is all in one my ground it is really hard to do without coding it so I found a tutorial online in which I am going to attempt to follow either next week or in my own time.

The houses part of this, I created a small cabin which i could use around the map as well as a few other structures but I am still toying with the idea of the one i have created.

The Trees never happened this week unfortunately but I will be picking these up as and when i can.

Please see screenshots below of the:

Week 5

This Week  I didn't make too many changes to my project, I added a new marshlands to the world and a big central mountain in the middle of the map. I plan on putting rocks and trees around the mountain with a few houses around here as a little village, similar to the marshlands.

With the map and how it is there are "Squares" on each map sort of like a "chunk" my plan with this is to do something different in each on the map, so one or two chunks may be a jungle, another may be a rocky land, a village in one or two etc etc to fill in the areas.

I also will go away throughout this week and look at videos on how to texture mountain and make things look a little more crisp. I have downloaded the unreal engine at home so I can play around with this and learn other little things.

That is all for this week.

Week 4

This week Unreal Engine was installed onto the PCs at college so I started on designing the map I will be using in my world.

I sat down with Elliott who is also in my class for most of the lesson going through the basics of Unreal engine, he shoes me how to make your world, how to raise and lower terrain and how to make water. (See below for a picture of the map face down.)

The next thing I did was the physics of the water, I have made it so that when the character goes into the water they move a lot slower and when they go under it their screen goes all blue and harder to see as if you are underneath. (Please see below for preview of this.)

Next week I plan on mapping out the terrain properly with all the hills and the lakes on the map and then see how long that takes, and go from there.

Week 3

This week I haven't done too much on my project really, All I managed to get done this week was finish off my presentation so it is ready to show to everyone, I have practised it once too to make sure I know what I am doing.

Apart from that I have watched a couple of videos on how to use Unreal Engine, one i found especially useful was this one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzoY062kY1s&t=1s

This is brilliant because it goes into intense detail and really explains how to do things to make it really clear, I will be using this to help me build my map in my game itself. I also need to start to look at how to make houses and other objects I will need on the map itself.

Classmate Elliott also briefly went through we me with Maya3D modelling but I will be sitting with him through it another day so he can explain it in a lot more detail for me.

That is all for this week.

Week 2

This week we started the lesson with a chat from our teacher Wayne, we went through the finalisation of the first task, which is our presentation of our initial ideas and what project we will be going with. The deadline for this is November 20th.

This week I focused solely on my presentation, I have gotten 11 slides out of it with the important information showing on the screen with notes to explain it all as I want to try and do it properly this time and learn it so when it comes to doing it in front of everyone in the class I will know what I need to say and what I am going to say.

This is similar to all of my slides so I can try and do this like a real presentation would be.

This is all I have done this week, apart from the odd YouTube video between writing my presentation to keep me motivated.

Week 1

This is my first blog I will be adding to this page in which I will be updating weekly on what I have done on my project and what I want to be doing.

I haven't chosen a project to do just yet, I have toyed with the idea of making something to do with Pi's such as a multimedia station and other things you can do with these. But I have also been looking at different games using Unreal engine as I am a passionate gamer myself so I feel this would be a fun project for me to do throughout the year.

This lesson I am going to decide on a project I want to do and look into more details into the project which could include looking at different YouTube clips or online blogs/websites to expand my knowledge and work out what is possible to do and what isn't.

I have spoken with my classmate Sam Barden and we have spoken about making a game on Unreal engine together as we both haven't looked into this at all and think it could be a good project for us both to work on as we both get on well with each other anyway and I know Sam is a hard worker and would be a good partner to have. We have decided against this now.

Before I came to the finalisation of the project I had a couple of initial ideas including something to do with Raspberry Pi. I first came up with an multimedia station, my family always have spotify on at home but always have to load up different apps and devices to change music and where they want it to be played, so I was toying with the idea of just making a multimedia station on a Raspberry Pi to keep in the kitchen where everyone could access it and change it to what they wished.
There are lots of guides out there which are easy and simple to follow such as this one here : http://www.lifehacker.co.uk/2013/01/22/turn-raspberry-pi-xbmc-media-center-30-minutes
This also offers a YouTube guide to help you set up which is here.

The Second Idea I had as a project was a 2D/3D Adventure game that is something similar a game called Magicite. This game involves finding loot around each dungeon, you have one life per game and make different characters each time you do the "run".

Another Game idea I had before I came to my conclusion was an open world game with quests around the world in which you can freely do whenever you want as you come across the people that give you them, With things to do round the world such as fight NPCs and gather resources, I prime example of this is Runescape although that is web based and my game would be made in Unreal Engine.

My last Idea I had was a game similar to Adventure Quest, every time you choose to "fight" it will give you a different random boss you will fight scaling with level your character is at the time, each fight gives you gold and XP for your character to level up and buy items to help you progress even further into the game.

The project I have chosen to do is to remake PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds and make it my own in Unreal Engine. I am going to plan on making a map with scattered villages and structures which will have set loot spawns in them, I will also create a plane for the start of the game which will fly over the map and allow the user to jump out of it when they wish.

The last thing I did today was start planning my presentation and doing the word document required for the assignment.
