Week 4

This week Unreal Engine was installed onto the PCs at college so I started on designing the map I will be using in my world.

I sat down with Elliott who is also in my class for most of the lesson going through the basics of Unreal engine, he shoes me how to make your world, how to raise and lower terrain and how to make water. (See below for a picture of the map face down.)

The next thing I did was the physics of the water, I have made it so that when the character goes into the water they move a lot slower and when they go under it their screen goes all blue and harder to see as if you are underneath. (Please see below for preview of this.)

Next week I plan on mapping out the terrain properly with all the hills and the lakes on the map and then see how long that takes, and go from there.

Week 3

This week I haven't done too much on my project really, All I managed to get done this week was finish off my presentation so it is ready to show to everyone, I have practised it once too to make sure I know what I am doing.

Apart from that I have watched a couple of videos on how to use Unreal Engine, one i found especially useful was this one here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzoY062kY1s&t=1s

This is brilliant because it goes into intense detail and really explains how to do things to make it really clear, I will be using this to help me build my map in my game itself. I also need to start to look at how to make houses and other objects I will need on the map itself.

Classmate Elliott also briefly went through we me with Maya3D modelling but I will be sitting with him through it another day so he can explain it in a lot more detail for me.

That is all for this week.

Week 2

This week we started the lesson with a chat from our teacher Wayne, we went through the finalisation of the first task, which is our presentation of our initial ideas and what project we will be going with. The deadline for this is November 20th.

This week I focused solely on my presentation, I have gotten 11 slides out of it with the important information showing on the screen with notes to explain it all as I want to try and do it properly this time and learn it so when it comes to doing it in front of everyone in the class I will know what I need to say and what I am going to say.

This is similar to all of my slides so I can try and do this like a real presentation would be.

This is all I have done this week, apart from the odd YouTube video between writing my presentation to keep me motivated.

Week 1

This is my first blog I will be adding to this page in which I will be updating weekly on what I have done on my project and what I want to be doing.

I haven't chosen a project to do just yet, I have toyed with the idea of making something to do with Pi's such as a multimedia station and other things you can do with these. But I have also been looking at different games using Unreal engine as I am a passionate gamer myself so I feel this would be a fun project for me to do throughout the year.

This lesson I am going to decide on a project I want to do and look into more details into the project which could include looking at different YouTube clips or online blogs/websites to expand my knowledge and work out what is possible to do and what isn't.

I have spoken with my classmate Sam Barden and we have spoken about making a game on Unreal engine together as we both haven't looked into this at all and think it could be a good project for us both to work on as we both get on well with each other anyway and I know Sam is a hard worker and would be a good partner to have. We have decided against this now.

Before I came to the finalisation of the project I had a couple of initial ideas including something to do with Raspberry Pi. I first came up with an multimedia station, my family always have spotify on at home but always have to load up different apps and devices to change music and where they want it to be played, so I was toying with the idea of just making a multimedia station on a Raspberry Pi to keep in the kitchen where everyone could access it and change it to what they wished.
There are lots of guides out there which are easy and simple to follow such as this one here : http://www.lifehacker.co.uk/2013/01/22/turn-raspberry-pi-xbmc-media-center-30-minutes
This also offers a YouTube guide to help you set up which is here.

The Second Idea I had as a project was a 2D/3D Adventure game that is something similar a game called Magicite. This game involves finding loot around each dungeon, you have one life per game and make different characters each time you do the "run".

Another Game idea I had before I came to my conclusion was an open world game with quests around the world in which you can freely do whenever you want as you come across the people that give you them, With things to do round the world such as fight NPCs and gather resources, I prime example of this is Runescape although that is web based and my game would be made in Unreal Engine.

My last Idea I had was a game similar to Adventure Quest, every time you choose to "fight" it will give you a different random boss you will fight scaling with level your character is at the time, each fight gives you gold and XP for your character to level up and buy items to help you progress even further into the game.

The project I have chosen to do is to remake PlayerUnknown Battlegrounds and make it my own in Unreal Engine. I am going to plan on making a map with scattered villages and structures which will have set loot spawns in them, I will also create a plane for the start of the game which will fly over the map and allow the user to jump out of it when they wish.

The last thing I did today was start planning my presentation and doing the word document required for the assignment.
